Whether you’re a cleaning enthusiast or someone looking to establish a more robust household routine, these insights will help you create a sparkling, hygienic environment that welcomes you in from the cold.
Here are some tips for keeping your house clean and disinfected during the fall/winter season:
- Regular Dusting
- Use microfiber cloths to trap dust particles – I use my Swiffer to keep things clean like the groves in my mirrors and the ceiling fan. It’s just quick and easy. Other days I use the my microfiber clothes with a Method disinfectant spray for random clean ups.
- Pay extra attention to heating vents and radiators – I use my Dyson vacuum corner attachment to get into the grooves or the Swiffer again.
- Vacuum Frequently
- Focus on high-traffic areas and entryways – The best thing I ever purchased for my home was a robotic vacuum. It cleans daily and sometimes twice a day when I’m having frequent company during the holiday season. It’s so easy to set it on schedule and move on with my day.
- Don’t forget to vacuum upholstered furniture – I have a Bissell cleaner that I use to refresh my performance velvet sectional or I use my Dyson vacuum.
- Disinfect High-Touch Surfaces
- Clean doorknobs, light switches, and remote controls daily – Disinfecting wipes like Clorox or Lysol wipes for the win.
- Use EPA-approved disinfectants or a diluted bleach solution – I mop the floors regularly with Lysol in a variety of scents.
- Maintain Indoor Air Quality
- Change HVAC filters monthly – If you don’t already have one, try to invest in one that not only filters air but freshens the air by reducing odors and has a washable filter.
- Use a humidifier to prevent dry air – I have humidifiers on both levels of my house and its very necessary. It seems to me with out I’ll get nose bleeds because the radiator air is so dry.
- Clean and Disinfect Bathrooms
- Scrub toilets, sinks, and showers weekly – Costco or even amazon has electric shower scrub brushes and it makes these chores so much easier.
- Wash bath mats and shower curtains regularly – this will keep them smelling fresh and clean.
- Kitchen Hygiene
- Disinfect countertops and sinks daily – I easily spray this down with Method disinfecting cleaner.
- Clean the inside of your refrigerator monthly – It seems like there as always random spills and crumbs so I quick wipe up with a disinfecting wipe of your choice will do the trick.
- Entryway Management
- Use doormats both outside and inside – really great to remove shoe dirt.
- Implement a “shoes off” policy to reduce tracked-in dirt – An absolute in my home! Living in NYC can be so filthy. Rats, bugs and poop seem to be everywhere. It’s an easy way to keep germs out by removing shoes as soon as I come home.
- Laundry Care
- Wash bedding weekly in hot water – Some washing machines have the steam / disinfecting setting and some do not. The easiest thing to do is make sure the water washing the bedding is extremely hot.
- Don’t forget to clean winter coats and accessories – Sometimes it may be easier to drop these off at the cleaner.
- Window Maintenance
- Clean windows and sills to prevent mold growth – You can use a disinfecting wipe or and all purpose cleaner spray with microfiber cloth.
- Ensure proper sealing to keep out drafts and moisture – An underrated step, but it will also help keep your utility bills down with knowing you have sealed all drafts.
- Declutter Regularly
- Organize closets and storage areas – It helps you keep track of all your belongings and most of all you can perform maintenance on whatever needs your attention. Clothes with holes, stains or that don’t fit well can be disposed of.
- Donate or store unused summer items – This is a good way to both refresh your closet as well help someone else.
